LECTURE 17/02/2021 : East goes East - John East on 20th-century buildings in the Czech lands
John East of the 20th Century Society gave a fascinating talk about buildings constructed in the Czech and Slovak lands during the 20th century. The wealth of modern buildings dating from the 1920s and 30s in particular, was a revelation and demonstrated the confidence of the young Czechoslovak state as it developed its new identity. Though this period of creativity was subsequently rudely terminated by the Second World War and the advent of the Communist state, nevertheless some fine buildings were still produced, which hold their own against those being built in the West. Particular examples are the crematorium at Bratislava and the embassy in London.
John East is well known as the unofficial photo-grapher for the Twentieth Century Society. He lectures frequently and his photographs are regularly used in Twentieth Century Society publications, most recently 100 Churches, 100 Years and 100 Twentieth-Century Gardens and Landscapes.
He has a regeneration and planning background by profession with many years working at Chief Executive, Strategic Director and Director level in local government and the private sector
