MAY 2024: WORKING PARTY IN MORAVIA
The Friends held a very successful volunteer working party at the Abbey Church at Žďár nad Sázavou in Moravia in late May when they were joined by members of the church. We accomplished two tasks.
The first was the removal of the rotten pine shingle capping on the boundary of the Lower Cemetery (which was in fact never used for burials), designed by the renowned Jan Santini-Aichel in 1720. This will enable the specialist craftsmen to replace the the capping as part of their remedial work to the roof of the entrance gateway.
On completion of this work we moved to the Abbey church where some of the pew platforms have been removed to allow the tile floor beneath to be relaid to eliminate rising damp. We removed sections of the tile and cleaned them ready for relaying. At the same time archaeologists were able to excavate the area to get a better understanding of the history of the construction the church.
To round off the week we joined members of the parish on a pilgrimage walk.
We are indebted to Zbyněk Vintr for arranging the working party and to his family and the parish for their hospitality.
