WORKING HOLIDAY IN BRNO
The Friends' second working holiday of 2017 took place last week and was based in the Villa Stiassni, an example of Functionalism, designed for the wealthy textile industrialist Alfred Stiassny by the architect Ernst Wiesner in 1927. This large villa sits in a garden on an extensive sloped plot of land. It has beautiful views across the garden to the hills opposite. Tasks involved upgrading works in the gardens and maintenance work to the villa.
During the week in mid July there were excursions for the participants. They visited the Jurkovič House, constructed in timber to the designs of Slovak architect and artist Dušan Jurkovič. On a walking tour of Brno the Czech Radio building was pointed out, being by Ernst Wiesner who also designed the Stiassni Villa where the working holiday was based. Dinner with the whole Stiassni management team at Pegas was served in a restaurant housed in a 14th-century building that has its own microbrewery.
