19.06.19 THE FRIENDS' VISIT TO WINCHESTER

St Cross cCeluici

The first stop was the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty, where we first viewed the Chapel with its remarkably intact Norman architecture. After coffee sitting outside the Hundred Men’s Hall the group enjoyed a tour of the Great Hall of the Hospital led by Barbara Peacock, one of the founders of The Friends. Lunch was at The Bell Inn nearby after which we set off for the Porters' Lodge, Winchester College. The tour of the College began with a visit to the College’s Lower Muniment Room with Suzanne Foster, the College Archivist, to see the Foundation documents and statutes and some items from the Fellows’ Library with a Czech connection.

The tour of the College continued with the medieval heart of the school and included the Chamber Court, Chapel, Cloisters and the 17th-century School building. The organ in the Chantrey chapel in the cloisters was played briefly by our Hon. Secretary James Robertson, to illustrate the connection of the composer S.S. Wesley with the School.

Tea at Refectory was followed by a short walk to the Cathedral for an introduction by Barbara Peacock. This was a great trip, superbly organised by Ian Kennaway and led by Barbara Peacock, a first-class guide.
