FRIENDS' WORKING PARTY The historic mill at Polnička, Žďár nad Sázavou
The full extent of this project became apparent only as the work proceeded. We knew we were to clean out a disused mill and our combined team of Czech and UK volunteers spent a week clearing dirt and rubbish, which had lain undisturbed since the mill was last used in 1957.
There was a tragic tale as the last miller was arrested and imprisoned by the communist regime in 1952 and his daughter, who still occupies the mill buildings, has given the site to the abbey church in Žďár nad Sázavou. It will become a museum of milling, and and will serve as accommodation for visiting pilgrims and visitors to the abbey church.
The week of combined enthusiasm from the volunteers provided the impetus to make this project a reality.
"It was really great fun and I am amazed how much effort you put into this working party. The whole idea with the Friends of the Czech Heritage is absolutely amazing. We would love to have you here again."
