COOPERATION WITH THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AWARD

MAY 2017 - COOPERATION WITH THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AWARD

DukeOfEdinMay2017 The work of The Friends of Czech Heritage was cited as an example of how to encourage volunteering in recent publicity by the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. It featured current participants in the award programme in the Czech Republic at work on the Jan Hus Church, Smíchov, Prague.

After long-term negotiation with the foundation The Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award we succeeded in bringing five volunteers to help with gardening and cleaning works round the Hussite Church in Smíchov. It was short, only one afternoon volunteer work, but very intensive. Five young ladies from the Prague office of the Department of the Environment were skillful and very fast. They have done excellent work. We hope that the successful collaboration will go on in future.

Although not ‘listed’, the building is a fine example of its type with a spectacular worship space, contemporary furniture and stained glass. It stands in a commanding position overlooking the neighbourhood. In 2016 this example of 1930s Modernism received a grant from The Friends to make the building suitable for exhibitions and other community activities.
