OUTING: Apsley House, Wellington Arch, Belgravia, on WEDNESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 2021
A SPECIAL TOUR OF SOME OF LONDON'S MOST FAMOUS LANDMARKS
Please note that this event had to be resheduled as a result of Covid-19 regulations
10.30am, morning: Apsley House and Wellington Arch.
2.30pm Walking tour by Anne-Marie Craven, to include the following:
- History of the Royal Parks and the developments within Hyde Park including the Serpentine, Rotten Row and Decimus Burton’s work.
- Hyde Park Corner, discussion of the specific monuments, and a general talk about London’s statues and memorials.
- Belgravia and the history of the Grosvenor Estate, and the heiress, Mary Davies.
- The London mews.
- The use of stucco in areas including Belgravia, Pimlico, Bayswater.
- The architecture of 'Pont Street Dutch'.
- The English Heritage blue plaque scheme.
- Developments around Sloane Square, including the London department store, and the 'Arts and Crafts' Cathedral (Holy Trinity).
4.30pm approximately: tour ends at Sloane Square.
Anne-Marie Craven as an art historian spent many years doing picture research and running a fine art picture library specialising in art, history and archaeology with some militaria. On retirement she trained as a Blue Badge Guide and does walking tours, even the odd virtual tour during lockdown, concentrating on London and the outskirts.
